A Different Kind of Loss

The death of a pet can be very traumatic.
I didn't know that until 3 years ago when
I unexpectedly lost my beloved Ernie. He
was not a stereotypical cat. I got him from
a pet store during college & would call
him the prring machine. He was sick for the
first few days and I wasn't sure he was going
to make it. Then after a visit to the vet,
he got stronger & lived a happy 7 yeas
that he may not have.
Ernie was the most affectionate cat I had
ever met. His grey bushy tail looked like
he was 1/2 squirrel. He always wanted to
be sitting on your lap, or pouncing at your
feet, even as you were walking. Ernie had
to sleep right above my head, watching over
me, making sure I didn't sleep through his
breakfast time. His glaucoma never got in
the way of meowing for a piece of cheese
or introducing himself to strangers with
an in your face greeting... literally.
One day I noticed that I wasn't tripping
over him and that he hadn't been out
to play.
He was spending more time under the
sofa
watching than as part of the action.
A woman
once told me that her elderly cat looked
up at her as if to tell her the time
had
come. I didn't believe her until the
summer
of 1999.
July 2nd, Ernie gave me that look. I cried
for a few days but realized how much love
he brought to my life just by being at the
door when I got home. I have to admit I was
a little embarassed as I underestimated how
his loss would affect me. Both time and memories
have allowed me to heal.

he passed away. He lived in Revere and was
my litttle "son" and my very best
friend. |
